Recreational Pilot License


Recreational Pilot Training is for anyone who wishes to be granted the privilege of flying an aircraft and to carry a maximum of one passenger, by day, and in Visual Flight Conditions (VFR).


Applicants must be 16 years of age or older.

Medical fitness

Applicants must hold a Category 4 medical certificate.


Applicants must have a minimum score of 60% in the overall written examination leading to the Recreational Pilot Permit—Aeroplane (RPPAE).

The minimum score of 60% also applies for each of the four mandatory subjects of the following examinations: Air Law, General Knowledge, Meteorology, and Navigation.


A minimum of 25 hours recreational pilot flight training under the direction and supervision of the holder of a Flight Instructor Rating—Aeroplane

The flight training includes

  • 15 hours of dual instruction flight time, including a minimum of 2 hours of cross-country flight time
  • 5 hours of solo flight time


Within the 12 months preceding the date of the application for the permit, the applicant must successfully complete a flight test as pilot-in-command.
